Clare Canny: a 4-H’er Continues Her Advocacy

The Foundation recently caught up with Clare Canny, a Georgetown rising ninth grader featured in our 2025 Annual Report for her work educating the public about the dangers of rodenticides. Clare’s resolve hasn’t wavered in the months since our initial article; in fact, she recently made another visit to the State House!
On July 1st, Clare testified in favor of bills in Newbury, Topsfield, Holyoke, Williamstown, Andover, North Andover and Maynard that would allow these towns the power to ban SGARs (second generation anticoagulant rodenticides). Her statements advocated for what is known as a home rule petition, so the towns can make their own decisions about banning SGARs on both public and private property. Clare testified in front of the Joint Committee on Environment and Natural Resources.

At the hearing, Clare shared her experience and advocacy to ban SGARs in her town of Georgetown. While at the State House, Clare was interviewed by WBZ NewsRadio 1030.
Clare’s advocacy also recently attracted the interest of the nationally syndicated radio show, American Family Farmer. She was featured on the show this month, and you can listen here.
In Georgetown, Clare hopes to ban SGARs on all school property in the future. “I’m also continuing to educate people about SGARs, because the majority of people just don’t know.”
Clare is spending her summer working at her local Market Basket, plus preparing to show her dog and chickens in the Middlesex County 4-H Fair. We can’t wait to see what she’ll do next!
